Distraction Technique

Often, the best way to combat dental anxiety is to distract yourself from worrying thoughts. At Dentists for Chickens each surgery is equipped with a television on the ceiling on which you can enjoy your favourite programmes, making you more at ease whilst you receive your dental treatment.

We also offer headphones so that you can listen to relaxing music. Alternatively, you can bring your own and listen to your favourite music with your earphones whilst your dentist completes your treatment.

Sedative Medicines

The Digital OPG & X-rays produce high quality images with lowest radiation dose

Some patients may require a little more help to overcome their fears. For these individuals the dentist, or your GP, can provide a sedative medicine, either in tablet or liquid form, or as an injection. Patients who choose to use sedative medicines may become drowsy but will still be able to co-operate with the dentist. The effects of sedative medicine take some time to wear off and your dentist will tell you how long the drugs will take to clear from your body.

Relative Analgesia

If you think that you will need some assistance in order to relax we can offer you relative analgesia, also known as inhalation sedation. This is where you breathe in through a Penthrox inhaler containing methoxyflurane that quickly leads to a pleasant, relaxed feeling. This is used in ambulances as well by paramedics.

This treatment option may make you feel a little drowsy, but you will remain conscious and any treatment given will cause you no discomfort. You can’t overdose on the gas, as the mixture quickly leaves the body if you breathe in one or two breaths of ordinary air. There are no after-effects either, and you can drive a car after about 15 minutes.

Intravenous or IV Sedation

We utilize intra oral camera technology that helps enhance your understanding of our diagnosis.

A trained medical practitioner will give you an intravenous anaesthetic, directly into your vein, which helps to sedate you and makes you a little bit drowsy. During this time the required treatment can be done easily. You will still be awake but will not be able to feel the procedure.
